Snowy Day

We are in the dark folds of winter and its a perfect time for hygge. Which means to get cozy with candles and blankets and leave the cold outside. Warm up with art books and draw in your journal, make some collages, paint some wintry scenes, practice anime figures, make paper mache masks, learn some new knitting stitches, you name it.

Here at the Freedman Kids art lab we will be making love rocks for Valentines at the senior hospital. Pictures coming soon. What will you make?

tin foil

As you know I love using easy to grab materials. I like showing how simple art making can be. And of course that doesn't mean beautiful rare expensive materials don't have their place too...they do...but for experimenting a little tin foil can go a long way. In our quest to do art projects that reflect different parts of the world, last week we made tin foil reliefs with guest artist Jenel Schaffer. These were meant in reference to the retablas made in Mexico that traditionally show iconic forms rendered in ink and pencil that are used for screens in religious settings. Look at what a great job the home-schoolers did.

The Art Assignment

Hi there-

I keep raving about this PBS youtube channel. So here is a link. One of the reasons I think so highly of it is that it introduces us to artists in an easy encapsulated format and gives us a snippet of an assignment that is bite-sized and easy to incorporate into our busy lives yet still meaningful.

Check it out!

We are using a map this year to learn about and discover art from around the world. So far we have gone to Russian and studied the deconstructivist sculptor Vladimir Tatlin and next we strapped on our seatbelts and zoomed over to Japan to study the polka dot power of contmeporary artist Yayoi Kusama. Please stay tuned to see where we go next.

trick or treat!

The Oven Bird

The summer has gotten off to a whip-fast pace and I fear will slip right by so I am posting some pictures right now midstream to capture it. Starting here with a lovely poem by Robert Frost to set the mood.

The Oven Bird

There is a singer everyone has heard,
Loud, a mid-summer and a mid-wood bird,
Who makes the solid tree trunks sound again.
He says that leaves are old and that for flowers
Mid-summer is to spring as one to ten.
He says the early petal-fall is past
When pear and cherry bloom went down in showers
On sunny days a moment overcast;
And comes that other fall we name the fall.
He says the highway dust is over all.
The bird would cease and be as other birds
But that he knows in singing not to sing.
The question that he frames in all but words

Is what to make of a diminished thing.
