mini summer art camp freedman kids

Our campers had a wonderful time doing art projects in the gallery and on the outside grounds this summer. They explored a variety of materials and concepts and were lucky enough to have an art camp experience side by side with actual art in the gallery. We used the summer exhibition as inspiration for our projects and did sun dials, photo prints, clay animals, vegetable paintings and collaged landscapes.

New Show in Gallery

Right now the Freeman Gallery has two exciting artists showing their sculptures. Their names are Adam Eckstrom and Lauren Was. They work together to create these life size sculptures of things you could only dream of like tropical islands, fancy homes, chandeliers, boats, and even cars! Even more amazing, these sculptures are made out of used lottery tickets. Think about what the artists might be trying to say by creating these sculptures out of used lottery tickets. The show is titled Ghost of a Dream: Future Perfect. I encourage you to come and see the show if you can. It will be up until April 23, 2010, but if you can't, here are some pictures taken from the show:

Yep those are all lottery tickets! How does this room make you feel?

Project:

Look around your house and find some materials that you are allowed to cut up (look for things like tags, pamphlets, newspapers, magazines, post cards, etc.) Now get some glue, scissors, and a big piece of paper. Look through the items you have collected and try to put different colors and shapes together to make a picture. The picture can be realistic or abstract.
Challenge: Find some cardboard and make a sculpture, then cover it with collaged images that you find!
