This week the kids did a project where they took old records and made them into cool new pieces of art. We had tons of fun taking something old and turning it into something new!

If you thought this project was cool and want to do it at home all you need are oil based markers (we used oil based sharpie markers), old records, and some imagination!! If you don't have any old records no worries you can use old CD's and regular permanent markers! Just be sure to let the markers fully dry before you touch them. Have fun and be sure to send us some pictures of your finial works!!

Buttons for Freedman Kids!

We have three wonderful Albright students helping us this year - Alyssa, Amanda and Jess. And we are implementing some new ideas- including these buttons! Kids who come to our programs get these lovely pins and will earn beads to hang from them with different projects they complete. 

Freedman Kids Say Cheese!

Fernando, Jacob, Haley and Bence proudly hold up the cast of characters they made from found objects. They were inspired by the Jeanne Verdoux Exhibition: Mr Bones and Friends. They collected materials, worked on their pieces, photographed them on location and then added stories, culminating in books and sharing. Scroll down and through to see all that they created!

Haley's Character Project/Story

One day an ordinary girl was sitting at the poolside. One day a superhero also known as the Fashion Police appeared. She went to the ordinary girl and said "You are in violation of fashion."
The ordinary girl said "But I am in my bathing suit."
"I don't want to hear it. You are going to fashion jail," she said.
"But why?"
She just said "SHHHH."

The ordinary girl spent four years in fashion jail. She was released and went shopping and they all lived happily ever after.

Bence's Character/Story Project

The Clam Soldier

Wind blew hard. The soldier walked across plains of Tennessee. He was trying to survive.

Suddenly the clam soldier woke up in a hospital. He sees his left arm missing. He turns his head forward and he sees a doctor talking to his wife. The doctor turns and walks into the room. "You have stepped on a landmine clam," said the doctor.

His wife walks in crying. She calms down and gives him a hug.

The next day he walks out of the hospital. He and his wife get in the car and drive home. They went into their house and ate a delicious dinner.

What I like about this one is Mrs. Bones. What I don't like is the dead bird. I like Mrs. Bones's dress. I like her hair. I also like her face. Mrs. Bones makes me happy and the dead bird makes me feel gross.

We started this year looking at the Samuel Bak Exhibition and making our own Shofars( a horn that rings in the New Year for Rosh Hashanah) and also worked on Illuminated Letter pages. New this year  the students are invited to lead a project and Jacob did the first one- making paper characters and performing an impromptu play.

Good bye to planting and Hello to Harvesting!

In addition to a wonderful summer camp we also introduced a new program that started in the spring, flourished in the summer and will continue into the fall, called Art and Gardening. Students, after school kids and anyone who is interested can come for a tour of our greenhouse and organic garden and then do a cool project. Participants will make field guides, go on scavenger hunts, make sprouted seed necklaces and terrariums and much more. Our Experimental Art Lab this fall will do such a program on our first day- which is right around the corner- next week on Monday Au

gust 26th from 4-5 pm.

This summer we had a wonderful at our Urban Art Summit mini immersion Art Camp where we did Spoken Word Poetry, got some air time on WXAC Radio, learned and performed some rad hip-hop dances and worked on cigar box art. Here are some cool pix.
